PLASTIC FREE JULY 2023

ALBANY HAS ITS OWN  RECYCLING 101 PRESENTATION
August 3, 2023 from 1-1:45 PM, Albany Senior Center, 846 Masonic Ave. Albany.

The Ecology Center’S PLASTIC FREE JULY, a series of events for community members to learn, take action, get tips on reducing plastic waste, and connect with others who are concerned about the global problem of plastic pollution.

In 2017, the City of Berkeley officially declared July Plastic Free Month joining international efforts to reduce plastic. Plastic Free July is an annual event that began in Western Australia in 2011 and has spread across the globe. It aims to raise awareness of the amount of plastic in our lives by encouraging people to reduce their reliance on single-use plastic disposables, reduce plastic pollution, and push for lasting solutions to the plastic pollution crisis- during July and beyond. Having launched one of the nation’s first curbside recycling programs in 1973, the Ecology Center has been a long-time champion of zero waste policies and models. We worked to bring Plastic Free July from Australia to the East Bay in the early 2010s in order to bring you into our fight against plastics!

Shopping refill can dramatically reduce the amount of plastic you consume and it’s easier than you’d think.

Plastic Free South Berkeley: Neighborhood Clean Up
& #BreakFreeFromPlastic
Brand Audit
South Berkeley Farmer’s Market 63rd & Adeline

Who is responsible for the plastic pollution in your neighborhood? For six years the #BreakFreeFromPlastic movement has been compiling data on which companies produce the plastic litter found in our neighborhoods, environment, and watersheds and collected from community members like you. At the end of each year this information is compiled into a global report and has been used to hold plastic producing companies accountable. Join the Ecology Center in taking part in this movement by cleaning up and auditing litter in South Berkeley! Bring your own gloves and buckets to pick up litter if possible, we will have equipment for folks who need it.

While a neighborhood clean up alone can feel like a reaction to the plastics problem, by collecting and leveraging data we can make a lasting impact by going after those who have made plastics so pervasive. Join the Ecology Center for Plastic Free South Berkeley: Neighborhood Clean Up & #BreakFreeFromPlastic Brand Audit. Together we will pick up litter and record its data to be submitted to #BreakFreeFromPlastic’s Global Brand Audit.
Feel free to come for part or all of the event.

This event is outside, please bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. Closed toed shoes are required.
