Our California legislators have not reintroduced the Make It Fair Amendment to close commercial property tax loopholes and recapture up to $9 billion dollars for schools and local government. In California, the same corporations avoid paying nearly $9 billion in property taxes. EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR. That money could help provide healthcare to families, educate our children, build affordable housing, train workers, feed our seniors, tend our parks, and so much more.
There’s a bold plan — the Make It Fair amendment — to close Proposition 13’s property tax loophole for the biggest corporations and recover those funds. But Sacramento politics are keeping the bill from even being introduced.
State lawmakers from the Assembly to the governor need to hear from their constituents now to build the momentum to get the Make It Fair amendment introduced and passed.
For decades, Proposition 13 has been the third rail of California politics — untouchable.
If we want to show that we value all Californians, then we have to end the Prop 13 property tax handout to corporations — collecting $9 billion in revenue to help fund the programs and services that the Trump administration and his allies in Congress want to end.
