The corrupt and discriminatory redistricting in Texas affects each and every one of us.
Let’s start with the truth: politicians afraid of losing power are rewriting the rules so they can hold onto it. What’s happening in Texas has become a national conversation because this isn’t just happening in Texas. Around the country, state legislatures are attempting to redraw district lines illegally so they can decide who holds power instead of the people.
Now, Texas Democratic Legislators have left the state to prevent a quorum on devastating mid-cycle redistricting votes. Other states have threatened to get in on the redistricting action because this isn’t about fair districts that represent the people. This is about holding onto power in the US House of Representatives.
The President is making outrageous moves to keep control of Congress. When those in power silence communities of color, other historically marginalized groups could be next. Across the country, state legislatures are illegally redrawing district lines — letting politicians choose their voters. We must act now to protect fair representation and ensure every voice is heard.
Redistricting in Texas is not happening because the President is concerned about fairness, and it has nothing to do with population changes. This is about one thing: conning Americans. Redistricting must serve the voters, not politicians – especially not mid-cycle, and never behind closed doors.
Each time politicians start scheming to subvert fair elections and misrepresent voters, the League of Women Voters will be ready to fight. Mid-cycle redistricting will only lead to gamesmanship and the weakened political power of historically disenfranchised communities.
