Good Trouble Lives On, on July 17, 2025, the anniversary of the legendary John Lewis’s passing five years ago, drew upwards of 600 local residents, and by some estimates 1,000, in peaceful protest of the erosion of American democracy. The rally in Albany, California, was a part of the nationwide mass mobilization to voice opposition to the constitutional crisis that is threatening the lives and human rights of millions of people that call the United States their home.

See the collection of photos below, taken of local civic leaders, neighbors, and old and new friends, who turned out in defense of our rights, our freedoms, essential government functions and programs like Medicaid, and the US constitutional system we must struggle to protect and strengthen.

The nonviolent action was joyously appreciated by participants, passersby who honked in cars and trucks, and city officials for being an inspiring demonstration of what Good Trouble means and what it can look like right here at home.

Good Trouble 1Just as John Lewis once set the example of a civil rights champion, who put everything on the line for the sake of human rights, community members honored him and engaged in Good Trouble by demonstrating that they will remain unbowed in the face of rising authoritarianism in the US.

Good Trouble 2Inspired by him and each other, they showed they can follow in his footsteps with grace, kindness, and a reinvigorated, undefeated spirit.
