Today, January 10, 2026, League of Women Voters of Berkeley, Albany, and Emeryville (LWVBAE) leaders hosted a protest for Renee Nicole Good, who was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, Johnathan Ross, on Wednesday morning in Minneapolis. Good was 37 years old, an award-winning poet, and a mother of three. According to multiple videos, she attempted to turn her vehicle away from ICE agents who had approached her car and were around her neighborhood, when she was tragically shot multiple times through her car window and killed.
The League’s protest began at 4:00 p.m. in Albany, organized in under 24 hours, with nearly 200 protesters bundled up in the cold weather protesting the unjust actions of ICE. Residents marched and stood along San Pablo Avenue, gathering near the intersection of Buchanan Avenue, where cars honked in support. LWVBAE set up a table with large sheets of blank paper, giving an opportunity for those wanting to express themselves an opportunity to create their own signs, alongside images of Good. The spirit of courage, resistance, and love for community could be felt throughout the gathering, with both inspiring and humorous messages such as: “I like my ICE crushed,” “Justice for Renee Nicole Good murdered by ICE,” “ICE deport yourselves,” “We’re all cool, no ICE please,” and a multitude of “Abolish ICE” messages. In addition to these signs there were many American flags. What used to be solely a symbol of right-wing values has recently been reclaimed by folks across the ideological spectrum. It embodies the hope and commitment to the rule of law that America is supposed to stand for in the face of injustice.
This protest was just one of thousands that have broken out over the past several months due to the illegal actions of ICE agents across the United States. There were an estimated 1,200 mobilizations across the country in all 50 states on January 10th. The brutal shooting of Good on January 7, 2026, has ignited a fire in thousands of protesters, who were marching and honking their support in solidarity. The mass mobilization last weekend followed the outcry in states across the country to stop unnecessary immigration enforcement deployments that infringe on the constitutional rights of immigrants, refugees and all who live here that are entitled to due process.
