LWVC has recently become an endorser for the AllCare Alliance, a coalition of organizations supporting single payer for California. The LWVC has one of the most widely distributed memberships in the state, compared with other members of the Alliance, and has the opportunity to be very important to the establishment of single payer here. In addition, because the national health care caucus for single payer has just requested a health care caucus at the LWVUS Convention, to be held June 6-10 in Dallas, TX. There will be a lot of work to be done before then, particularly
- clarifying what is and isn’t working with the ACA, about which everyone has questions,
- what the pathway might be in different states to improvement in healthcare coverage beyond the ACA,
- how single payer is the best outcome and how each state will have to find its own way, including California, which is the biggest state to be anywhere near.
We will need to be working both on California plans and national plans. The next meeting of the LWVBAE Health Care Team will be on March 17th at 1:30 pm at the League office on San Pablo. Chair Li-hsia Wang will be sending out more information as it is available.
